How to live a good life- that has been the question of all questions ever since Homo sapiens satisfied basic needs and started striving for something more meaningful. This question puzzled philosophers, spiritual seekers, writers, artists, and everyone who ever had that weird feeling often expressed through the question ‘is this all there is?’. People created projects, philosophies, quests, moral codes around this question.
Is this question even possible to answer? No one really knows and many will tell you that the path to answer it may be more meaningful than the answer itself. Journey, not the destination…
In my own life, I’d say I came to this question pretty late and through multiple existential crises. For many years, I struggled to survive and make ends meet. “How do you live a good life” is a luxury question. The quest for meaning is high on Maslow’s pyramid of needs. We must be safe and healthy and not hungry and worried in order to think about the meaning of life. What’s more, we must have time and desire to look for meaning. That often means that we have exhausted many of the other sources:
