Wendy, I agree 100% that today’s workplace is not at all optimized for any depth and meaningful work and is instead just putting out small fires and being reactive all the time. I really like Cal Newport’s quote from Deep Work:
“Busyness as a proxy for productivity: In the absence of clear indicators of what it means to be productive and valuable in their jobs, many knowledge workers turn back toward an industrial indicator of productivity: doing a lots of stuff in a visible manner.”
I think a lot of it is up to us, but it is an uphill battle, that’s for sure.
